Cornwell Park
150 East Main Street
Cornwell Park is a tiny 0.2-acre pocket park nestled in the heart of downtown Flushing, at the southwest corner of Main Street and Cherry Street. Once the site of the original First State Bank, the land was gifted to the city in 1961 by local businessman Edgar L. Cornwell after the bank relocated to a new building. After the bank moved, the building was removed and Mr. Cornwell – in his final civic gesture – donated the vacant lot to the Village of Flushing, establishing a trust fund to help transform it into a public park that now bears his name. Today, Cornwell Park is a charming, beautifully landscaped oasis where residents and visitors can take a break from shopping or running errands to relax under the shade of mature trees and enjoy a peaceful moment downtown.
Park Features:
- Historic Origin: Established in 1961 on the former First State Bank lot, thanks to a land donation by Edgar L. Cornwell who also funded the park’s initial development through a dedicated trust.
- Landscaped Green Space: Well-kept lawn, colorful flower beds, and shade trees create a serene atmosphere in the middle of the city.
- Benches & Seating: Several benches and picnic tables invite you to sit and enjoy a coffee, lunch, or good book outdoors.
- Decorative Fountain: A small fountain (seasonal) adds to the park’s charm with the soothing sound of running water.
- Passive Recreation: Cornwell Park is designed for relaxation and socializing. It’s a quiet spot for conversation and enjoying the surroundings.
- Accessibility: Located along city sidewalks, the park is easily reachable on foot. There is no dedicated parking lot, but visitors can find street parking or use nearby public parking in the downtown area.
