River Road Canoe/Kayak Launch
8017 East River Road
The River Road Canoe/Kayak Launch is a scenic access point on the Flint River that provides a convenient spot for paddlers to launch and land canoes, kayaks, and other small non-motorized watercraft. The launch is a carry-in access on the south bank of the Flint River, meaning paddlers can hand-carry their boats from the parking area to the water’s edge. As part of the Flint River National Water Trail, the River Road Launch is one of the designated public access points along the 73-mile Flint River Water Trail. The setting is peaceful and natural – expect to be surrounded by trees and to catch views of waterfowl, turtles, and fish as you start your river adventure. Whether you’re beginning a paddle trip or stopping off while floating down the Flint River, the River Road Launch is a valuable community resource for enjoying Flushing’s beautiful riverfront.

Launch Features:
- Launch Type: Carry-In Canoe/Kayak Access – Natural riverbank entry (no boat ramp). Suitable for launching kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and other small non-motorized watercraft. (Motorized boats are not permitted, as there is no trailer ramp.)
- Location: 8071 E. River Road, Flushing, MI. The launch is easily reached via a short access drive off East River Road, approximately 1.5 miles east of Downtown Flushing.
- Parking: Small Gravel Parking Area – Space for about 5–10 vehicles. Please park in designated spots only and keep the access drive clear.
- River Access: Flint River Paddle Route – Launch into the Flint River, which flows northwesterly from Flushing toward Montrose and the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge. The water here is typically shallow and calm, ideal for beginner to intermediate paddlers. Water levels can be low in late summer, so check conditions if planning a trip during dry periods.
- Amenities: The site offers a rustic, natural setting with minimal amenities. There are no restrooms or drinking water at the launch. Visitors will find a few picnic tables and open space in the adjacent River Road Park – a great spot for a riverside picnic or to relax before/after a paddle. Trash bins may not be provided, so please carry out all your trash (Leave No Trace).
- Accessibility: Currently, the launch has a grass and dirt pathway to the river, which may be uneven or muddy.
- Usage & Guidelines: Open daily from dawn to dusk. Use is free, and no launch permit is required. Pets are allowed on leash. All users should follow standard paddling safety practices: wear a life jacket/PFD, be aware of river conditions, and go with a partner if possible. If fishing, ensure you have a Michigan fishing license. Swimming is not advised at the launch due to river currents.
- Flint River Water Trail: The River Road Launch is Access Site #21 on the official Flint River National Water Trail, which received National Park Service designation in 2020 as one of Michigan’s first National Water Trails. As such, you may notice Flint River Water Trail signs or mile markers at the site. This indicates that the launch is part of a larger network of 20+ public river access points spanning approximately 72 miles of the Flint River. Paddlers can plan trips between various sites – for example, launching here and taking out downstream at the Flushing Township Nature Park or further into Genesee County.
